Ocean Friendly Gardens, Raptoberfest, Dick Dale and more…

Surfrider

Surfrider

Dear Surfrider Supporter,

October is approaching fast and I want to highlight some upcoming events and campaign successes.

Join us at our Chapter meeting on October 1st as we welcome Paul Herzog, Surfrider National’s Ocean Friendly Garden guru. We will be discussing the value of Ocean Friendly Gardens as well as how to build one on your property. Directly following the meeting we will be headed out on the beach to take part in Surfrider’s Raptoberfest by cleaning up One Foot at a Time.

I am happy to report that we have made significant progress in our campaign to Save Asbury Park’s north end beach from development. Just last week the Asbury Park City Council sent a letter to the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders asking them to consider purchasing the Bradley Cove lot as dedicated parkland. In that same week Asbury’s Waterfront Redevelopment Plan Advisory Committee recommended the Townhomes at Bradley Cove be removed and that land be dedicated to open space and recreation. Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming event in Asbury Park in late October.

On October 21st the legendary Dick Dale will perform at Joey Harrison’s Surf Club with Sonny Kenn and Rich Uncle Skeleton. A donation from event proceeds will go towards the Jersey Shore Chapter of Surfrider Foundation. Come join us for this rare treat to see Dick Dale, the king of surf guitar, perform at the Jersey Shore while supporting the Jersey Shore Chapter.

Finally, on October 27th the Jersey Shore Chapter will be holding a Rain Barrel Training in Brielle from 6 – 8 pm. Come learn about rain barrels, build one and bring it home to install. Click here to register.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Surfrider Foundation:Last Public Meeting for New (No) Beach Access Rules

Surfrider

Surfrider

Come out to tell the Governor we want him to start over on his beach access rules!

Dear Surfrider Supporter,

This monthly update will be short and sweet.

Thank you to all the volunteers that came out to pack the Asbury Park City Council meeting and the over 250 that came out to our Memorial Day rally. We have sent a clear message to the AP City Council and our statewide representatives that we will not allow them to turn the north end beach of Asbury Park into high-end townhomes. Check out the photo from the rally on saveasburypark.surfrider.org . Check the site again soon for more photos from Saturday’s rally and campaign next steps. If you have not signed up for our Save Asbury Park campaign e-mail updates, you can do that at the site as well.

Access is now the focus. This Thursday will be the fourth and final public hearing on the new (no) access rules. This is the only hearing that is being held in the evening. We need to turn out our supporters and all beach users in force! This new rule is disastrous for some locations and is a step in the wrong direction for all beaches. By disregarding the Public Trust Doctrine the DEP and Governor Christie are making our public beaches less accessible, not more. Pass the details of this hearing on to everyone you know. The public hearing is at 7 pm on Thursday June 2nd at the Long Beach Township Court Room (6805 Long Beach Boulevard – Brant Beach), Long Beach Island.

If you want to submit written comments, please check the details here . Written comments must be submitted by Friday, June 3rd.

Don’t forget about our Chapter meeting this month on June 11th at Monmouth Beach Cultural Center. Starting at 10 am we will have guest speaker Cara Muscio from Rutgers to talk about rain gardens and water quality.

Keep up the good fight and I hope to see you soon!
