Surfrider Foundation Jersey Shore Chapter: Rally to Keep Asbury Park’s North End Beach a Beach!

Surfrider

Surfrider

Rally May 28th at 4 pm in front of Asbury Tower

Dear Surfrider Supporter,

One of the last coastal open spaces in Monmouth County is threatened, Asbury’s north end beach. The City’s Waterfront Redevelopment Area Plan calls for townhomes to be built on that site, partially on Green Acres land. Beach access and ocean views would be grossly altered. The existing parking lot would be significantly diminished. Development also includes destroying the north portion of the boardwalk and creating a low, winding walk that would impose a private feel on this public space.

Come out to Asbury Park’s north end beach this Saturday May 28 at 4 pm to help save one of Monmouth County’s last coastal open spaces! Plans include creating a living model of the proposed development that will show how dramatically our beach will be impacted. Surfrider will also release findings from a statewide scientific poll regarding beachside development and drawings comparing the proposed construction to a greener, park alternative.

See our events page for all the details and confirm your attendance via our FaceBook invite or e-mail me directly.

Check out our website www.saveasburypark.com and FaceBook page for more information.

Thank you to all the Surfrider members and Asbury Park residents that packed the Council meeting Wednesday night. A clear message was sent to the Asbury Park City Council to amend their Waterfront Redevelopment Area Plan to preserve open space on the north end beach. For a quick recap see the Jersey Shore website.

Spread the word about Saturday’s rally to anyone who cares about coastal open space and Asbury’s North End Beach.

Looking forward to having some fun on Saturday afternoon.

Chair, Jersey Shore Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation

PS Get ready for the final public hearing on the new beach access rules next Thursday, June 2nd at 7 Pm on Long Beach Island. See our events page for all the details.

Surfrider Foundation Jersey Shore Chapter: Three Ways to Help Our Coast This Month!

Surfrider

Surfrider

Our Coast Needs Your Help!

Dear Surfrider Supporter,

First off, I want to give a big thank you to all the volunteers that helped make our event filled April rock. Special thanks goes out to Conner O’Brien who stepped up to lead our Manasquan Beach clean-up and Kate C. who organized our “Stoked for Rob Machado” concert at the Stone Pony. Both were awesome events thanks to Chapter volunteers!

Secondly, there are more opportunities to help our coast this month than in recent memory. Our coastline in under siege by a triple threat – restricted access, unsustainable coastal development and offshore drilling. Here is how you can help protect the Jersey Shore from these 3 threats:

1. Beach Access Rules that Limit Access
Three public hearing are schedule for the new access rules. Do not let this opportunity pass without letting the Christie administration know that you want more access to our beaches, not less!

2. Help Save Asbury Park’s North Beach
The Asbury Park City Council has an opportunity to amend their Waterfront Redevelopment Plan in a way that would remove the most unsustainable project, the Bradley Cove Development, and replace it with an oceanfront park. Send them an e-mail and then come out to the City Council meeting on May 18th and ask the City Council to preserve the last piece of coastal open space in Monmouth County!

3. Offshore Oil Drilling
Congress is voting on a bill that would open our coasts to offshore drilling. Contact your Congressman today and tell them you do not support offshore oil drilling in our coastal waters. Do they think we forgot about what happening last summer in the Gulf?

Don’t forget about our Chapter meeting this month on May 14th at Fins in Bradley Beach. We will be showing Surfrider’s “The Cycle of Insanity: The Real Story of Water” followed by a discussion of our active campaigns – Asbury Park, Beach Access and Clean Water!

Here is a list of events not to miss this month:

? Public Hearing on New Beach Access Rules - May 12 2011 – 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Jersey City NJ

? Chapter Meeting – May 14 2011 – 09:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Bradley Beach, NJ

? Public Hearing on New Beach Access Rules – May 17 2011 – 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Pomona, NJ

? Asbury Park City Council Meeting – May 18 2011 – 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Asbury Park, NJ

? Public Hearing on New Beach Access Rules – May 23 2011 – 1:00 PM – 12:00 AM, Seaside Heights, NJ

? Chapter Film Social- Picaresque starts at 7:00 PM, May 19 at Trinity and the Pope.

Keep up the good fight and I hope to see you soon!

This Mothers Day, show some love for your Mother Ocean.

Surfrider Foundation

Surfrider Foundation

Our Mother Ocean gives us a home away from home. We surf, we swim and we build sand castles with the kids. We explore tide pools, revel at the dramatic sunsets and warm ourselves by a bonfire at night. We inhale the salty ocean air, bury our toes in the warm sand, immerse ourselves in the cool water and slowly walk along the moving tide line.

Today, you can give something back to the oceans and beaches that give us all so much.

Make a donation to the Surfrider Foundation to help us protect our Mother Ocean and as a special thank you, we’ll send you a free tube of Stila Bronzing Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 (retail price $32)!

Your donation today will go directly to help us keep the oceans, waves and beaches you love clean and safe.

For our oceans, waves and beaches,
